SUSAI have been operating weaving business over 110 years in Kiryu city, Gunma, Japan since it’s foundation by Saishichi Sunaga in 1906. We have produced various fabrics by responding to the market demands of each generation, from silk fabric for Japanese Kimono, fabric for import dresses in the old days, to Jacquard fabric for local women’s clothes in recent years.

For these few years, we are in challenge to produce original products such as hats, caps and bags, products made from natural material such as silk which is our starting point, and moreover,  R&D for new fabric for industrial use which is woven with metal thread (copper, tin alloy etc.). In 2020, our atelier shop opened by partly renovating our factory to develop and sell our original products.

I have three visions about “Creation” to implement through these daily business.

Firstly, “Creation of products”

It is said that people purchase ‘experience’ instead of ‘products’ nowadays. It is important for creators to imagine users getting excited and happy with a Kawaii (cute) item when they create products. I believe that enjoying the creation from the bottom of the heart let creators discover new ideas or viewpoints.

Secondly, “Creation of Talents”

Textile industry has been male dominated for a long time. I had the sense of incongruity that fabric products made most for females were actually produced at a factory full of males. Now that many women are already active in society, I would contribute my effort to provide an environment where more young creators and engineers, regardless of gender, can lively create things, and that more people who truly enjoy creation would be connected to the future.

Last but not least, “Creation of Local Community”

Kiryu city of Gunma, the place where we locate is well known as a comprehensive textile industry area that has not only weaving but also sewing, knitting, embroidering and lace producing industry, which is a very unique situation in the whole world. Until now, we were not able to utilize and make the most of the relationship within the community even though being in this attractive environment. But recently, new movements and activities by young generations are often seen in Kiryu. As a member of Kiryu, we would like to contribute to the community while valuing the new connection whom loves Kiryu, the globally unique textile industry area.

Jacquard fabric made from more materials causes more people to be involved,  and complex, but a various, unique and beautiful expression can be done. I wish that creation of products, talents and local community will actively circulate and also weave the future generation of the local community and textile industry.
